Oregon Scientific Smart Globe Explorer AR

If you’re looking for an amazing gift to give this festive season, the Oregon Scientific Smart Globe Explorer is going to be an instant hit. You can travel the globe and Solar System in the comfort of your own home, learn amazing facts and use the AR technology to bring places to life.

There are over 220 counties to explore with over 42 games and over 2 and a half hours of content available. Although this wondrous globe is aimed at children aged 5+, my son at 3 also loves playing with it and I can see with the tree different age settings how older children will also enjoy learning from this for years to come. As it’s aimed at growing with your child, it’s good to see how well it’s made. The age levels are 5-8, 9-14 and 15+.

Best bits

I love ow easy and intuitive it is to use. Once you take it out of the box, you can immediately start to have a play and discover all kinds of interesting things. My 3 year old is able to easily navigate the world with the Smart Learning Pen (or the Space Rocket) and can touch the globe to hear the counties names. Isabella, at 6, uses the globe more and delights in learning new facts. She has wanted a globe for a while now and this one just blows her mind. She loves seeing how small England looks in comparison to other countries and has been asking about how far away Greece is as we travelled there over the summer.

You only need to charge the wireless pen. I was expecting to have to charge the globe too but amazingly, you just charge the Smart Touch Pen and away you go! The pen can be charged through a USB easily and quickly.

Entertaining and Engaging

The whole globe is fascinating and can engage the children for long periods. Isabella currently loves hearing the different songs and national anthems being played as well as making Mummy and Daddy ‘beat the clock’ on the find the countries game. Benjamin is absolutely obsessed with the AR APP and learning more about his favourite dinosaurs. Although the children need to borrow my phone to use the AR element of this globe, it in no way detracts from the other amazing features they have at their fingertips at any other time. It’s just a nice additional feature. Older children are likely to have their own devices anyway so it won’t be an issue.

So what can you do?

The basic functions on the Smart Globe Explorer are that you can learn where the countries, continents and capital cities are but you can also do so much more. You can see how long it would take you to fly to destinations, find out the populations, currency used, information about the world leaders. All of this information (as well as so much more) is easily available through the simple touch of the smart learning pen. Some of the smaller counties need a little more precision when using the pen but overall it’s phenomenal.

Opening up the globe to reveal the cross section of the planet as well as the solar system is brilliant. You can use the miniature map of the UK as a stand for the opened globe and being on the inside of the globe, the children feel they understand the concept of what the planet is made up of.

In addition to the games and activities available on the smart globe itself, there are also quizzes available in the AR APP. These are really interesting and engaging (even for adults) and I find myself getting competitive with the children.

We have had so much fun learning through the Oregon Scientific Smart Globe Explorer and we haven’t even fully utilised all the elements yet because of the children’s ages. This really is a gift that will grow with the children and has provided them with lots of entertainment as well as being a fantastic learning resource. It would definitely be one of my top choices for children’s gifts this year.
