ThePhoneCloud PX1 Children’s Mobile Phone : Review and Giveaway

It seems to me that younger and younger children are being given mobile phones of their own – whether it’s an older sibling or a parent’s old handset or whether they have been bought a brand new phone, young children seem to be sporting mobiles like fashion accessories. We’ve been looking at the PX1 a children’s mobile and putting it to the test.

Now there is nothing to say that younger children shouldn’t be allowed mobiles but as a parent, I would want to try and ensure that my child was as safe as they could possibly be with the world at their fingertips. After all, the internet can be a dangerous place if you don’t know what dangers you’re looking out for. This is where The Phone comes in. Their PX1 mobile phone has been designed with safety in mind.

Safety is at the forefront of the design

Dad to four boys, Russell Whitlock knew just how dangerous phones could be. Cyber bullying can be a real issue that affects so many children and sometimes parents are completely unaware, not because they are oblivious to their children, but because kids can hide a lot! Well the PX1 comes with the ability to monitor and control the use of your child’s phone from your computer. The idea behind The Phone Cloud is to offer children their first taste of having a mobile but also giving parents the ability to manage screen time and keep children safe while they are online.

Looks great

Kids can be pretty fussy when it comes to phones though and only the best will do. The Phone Cloud’s PX1 handset is a pretty sharp looking android and with three colours to choose from, it won’t be hard to kind one to suit. It has a 1280 x 720 resolution 5.5″ screen which is plenty big enough to WhatsApp their friends and take selfies. Although the camera doesn’t produce your top of the range images, it does sport an 8MP camera and seems to do the job well enough! There are multiple options for the camera with normal mode, panoramic or face beauty which is all the rage these days.

The phone has up to 7 hour talk time but one thing to note is that charging the phone does take some time so you’ll need to ensure you leave enough time to charge the phone before you need to use it. There’s 32 GB capacity fot them to store their selfies and apps too.

Safety First

So with the children happy, it’s now about keeping them safe. From the control hub dashboard you are able to: Filter social media, set time limits on screen time, control the apps that are installed, track where your child is, filter websites you don’t want your child to use, shutdown or restart the phone, check the internet history and use the ground mode lock. You can check up on everything your kids have been using the phone for and can even set banned keywords too so sites or searches containing these words will be blocked.

As well as all of these easy to navigate parental controls there are also some inbuilt elements which will keep your mind at rest. With some apps like WhatsApp, you can’t always see or control the images that you send and receive – until now! If your child is trying to send a picture which is inappropriate, the phone will block this and you will be alerted so you can have a conversation about this with your child. It will also send you an alert if your child is sent an inappropriate message. I sent the below photo and had this message on my phone within seconds. It’s about helping to teach your children about staying safe on phones and I think this is a brilliant first phone.

With safeguarding at your fingertips, you can enjoy peace of mind while your child enjoys the freedom of being given their first phone. Although you have to pay £5 a month for the use of the control panel, this is constantly being updated with blocked websites and content to keep your child as safe as possible online. If you buy a contract through their site, the control panel price is included. To me, this is most definitely worth forgoing an extra Costa a month! Currently The Phone are offering free Bluetooth headphones (worth £59.99) with the purchase of every phone.

I love the parental monitoring safety features. My daughter is (almost) 8 but going on18 and is at that age where having one of my old, not really functioning handsets isn’t cutting it any more. Times have changed so much since we were children (social media was none existent then) and it scares me so much the thought of her putting herself in this minefield without me being able to fully see what’s happening. Let’s face it you can talk to your child till you’re blue in the face about protecting themselves but are they always going to listen? Or even understand the dangers?? So this phone is a genius invention and would be an absolute god send (and also a fantastic additional birthday pressie for her in July!!)
