Splendiferous Summer with Roald Dahl and Mr Kipling

A little over a week ago we were kindly invited by Cirkle PR to a lovely event at The Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden to celebrate their collaboration with Mr Kipling. Well who would turn down the opportunity to visit such a gorgeous place – especially with the added attraction of hearing about (and perhaps sampling more than just a couple) of the scrumptious Mr Kipling Cakes!

I don’t live far from The Roald Dahl Museum at all but it’s somewhere I haven’t taken the children yet as I thought they might be a bit too small. Isabella (at the tail end of 4) had an absolutely marvellous day; she got involved with all the activities on offer and thoroughly enjoyed herself. Benjamin, being just 2, was too little to get anything from the day really and I sent most of the day chasing him around. He still had a brilliant day though – he loves running and climbing and adored the Fantastic Mr Fox models.

Great Missenden was home to Roald Dahl for over 40 years and if you look closely enough, you can see where lots of his inspiration for his books came from. Before the day really started, we had a special look at some of Roald Dahl’s original drafts for his stories. We even got the chance to see the sandals that Roald Dahl sent Quentin Blake and became the inspiration for the BFG’s shoes! Isabella even learnt that before his granddaughter was born, the character of Sophie in the BFG was actually going to be a boy named Jody!

Luckily, the fun didn’t stop there – we also had a tour of the village which was lovely – I feel I got more from the tour than the children though. Now I know a little of the history, I can recount it to the children.

The museum itself is full of wonder. You can dress up, listen to audio, make your own mini films, get creative in the craft area or listen to wonderful stories. Of course, you can also explore the different rooms and learn about where Roald Dahl actually sat and wrote all his wondrous adventures. Both the children had great fun exploring.

Once we had finished discovering all we could, it meant one thing. Afternoon tea – which of course means we were just going to scoff lots of cakes! Mr Kipling have joined forces with Roald Dahl for a Splendiferous Summer of fun. Each of their promotional packs offer you the chance to WIN wonderful prizes for you and your family. You can get your hands on these promotional packs from Tesco for just £1! Once you’ve eaten the yummy delights inside, use the promotional code inside on their website to see if you’ve won!

We couldn’t have enjoyed our day any more – and we are still enjoying ourselves. Isabella has totally fallen in love with the BFG; we watched both films before but now at bedtime we are reading the book. We even managed to create a stone model of the BFG on the beach! If you are looking for something fun to do this summer – the Roald Dahl museum is a real treat!
