Having been to Greece with the family a couple of years ago, we are desperate to go back. We loved the weather, the country and the time difference. For a young family, in my mind, Greece makes a fantastic travel destination. You have the good weather, scenic views and lovely culture all wrapped up in one spectacular place.

So here’s my top reasons to visit Greece and tick it off your bucket list.

Gorgeous Beaches

Greece is steeped in history and is enveloped in beauty. Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Greece has the largest coastline in Europe so you’ll be able to find picturesque beaches to relax on and unwind while taking in all the beauty of the coast. The waters are famous for their turquoise colour and the list of beautiful sandy beaches is endless. Go for a tourist hot spot or try and find a secluded more peaceful spot, you’ll find it all in Greece.

Elafonissi Beach (south west Crete) is a spectacular scene and one not to be missed if you have the chance. With its crystal clear, warm waters and stunning pink sandy beach, this is a real gem. You can float around with the fish or unwind with the sand between your toes. You can enjoy the beach or the lagoon and take in the magic for the day. But there are so many beaches in Greece, if you can’t visit Crete, you’ll find paradise elsewhere.

Rich History

Look a little bit further than the coast and you will see some of the most magnificent historic sites in Greece’s cities. From Athens’ beautiful Acropolis, The Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea to Greece’s amazing Islands full unique wonder. You can visit the sites and soak up the history and ancient architecture with the backdrop of whitewash houses of Santorini and stunning clifftops.

Santorini is probably one of the most well-known destinations to visit due to its most scenic and spectacular beauty. With its quaint villages and incredible restaurants you’ll be blown away by the sites.

The Best of Both

For both beaches and history, Corfu will likely tick all the boxes. Rich in cultural heritage, Corfu also has some of the most spectacular beaches in Greece. Although some beaches will be busy, there are so many beaches to visit in Corfu that you’ll be able to find a piece of heaven for yourself. Having spent time on the beach, you can go exploring the picturesque towns and villages. In Corfu Old Town and Perithia you’ll find the Old Fortress, churches and anti-pirate castles and you can spend the hours winding your way through a warren of lanes to explore the local shops and museums too.

Perfect Weather

The weather in Greece is usually very predictable. I say usually because we actually went in the summer of 2018 and it was experiencing unusual amounts of thunderstorms but were assured by the locals how unusual this was. Greece is nice most of the year round with warm sunny summers and mild winters. If you aren’t confined by school holidays, make the most of the better prices and lovely weather and travel in April-June or September-October and you’ll get the best of both worlds.

We’re going to go back to Greece in the summer of 2020 and can’t wait to explore more of what the country has to offer.
